iPhone Upload Changed Photo File Names?
You named your photos carefully, started the upload — and the filenames came out wrong. This is a frustrating but common problem. Here is why it happens and how to work around it.
Why iPhone uploads may show different filenames
When you share or upload a photo from the Photos app, iOS may export the image through its own pipeline before it reaches the destination. In that process, some services — eBay, Etsy, Google Drive, Dropbox, or browser file pickers — can strip or replace the original filename with a hash, a timestamp, a generic string, or a sequential number the platform assigns itself.
The result is filenames that look like A7F3C9D1-92B4.jpeg or image_20240615_143022.jpg — nothing like the clean IMG_0047.jpg sequence you wanted.
The root cause is usually the upload tool, not iPhone itself. But since you cannot control how every platform handles incoming files, the practical fix is to rename your batch before you upload, not after.
Why a ZIP can help preserve order
A ZIP file is a container. When you extract it, the filenames inside come out exactly as they were packed in — the receiving platform never gets a chance to rename them in transit.
Img Name Fixer creates a renamed ZIP in your browser. You download it to the Files app, extract it there, and upload the individual files directly from Files. Because you are uploading files from a folder rather than sharing from the Photos library, many platforms receive the clean IMG_#### filenames you set.
This is not a guarantee — some platforms will still rename on their end — but it is the most reliable workaround available without a dedicated desktop app.
How to rename before upload
- 1
Open Img Name Fixer in Safari on your iPhone.
- 2
Tap Select Photos and choose the batch you want to upload.
- 3
Choose your sort order — Capture Time for chronological, or drag manually.
- 4
Set a prefix (e.g. IMG_), starting number, and padding.
- 5
Tap Download ZIP.
- 6
Open the Files app, go to Downloads, and extract the ZIP.
- 7
Upload the extracted files from Files to your destination.
What this tool cannot change
- ·Img Name Fixer does not control how the destination platform handles incoming filenames.
- ·It does not change iPhone's built-in camera roll numbering.
- ·It does not convert HEIC files to JPG — HEIC files are renamed but the format is unchanged.
- ·It does not guarantee recovery of the original IMG_#### numbers from the camera roll.
- ·It does not save the renamed batch directly to Photos — the ZIP goes to Files.
Your photos stay on your device. Img Name Fixer processes everything locally in your browser — no photos are sent to any server. The renamed ZIP is created entirely on your iPhone.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my iPhone upload create strange filenames?
Some upload tools, web apps, and cloud services process the file on the way in and may assign a hash, timestamp, or generic name instead of preserving the original. This is a behaviour of the receiving platform, not something iPhone controls.
Will a ZIP preserve my renamed files?
Yes. A ZIP stores the exact filenames you chose. When you extract the ZIP in Files and upload from there, the filenames travel with the files rather than being reassigned during an upload step.
Can I choose the starting IMG number?
Yes. Img Name Fixer lets you pick any starting number — for example, IMG_0047 — as well as the prefix and how many digits to pad.
Does this work on iPhone Safari?
Yes. Img Name Fixer is a mobile-first browser tool that works in Safari on iPhone. No app download is needed.
Are my photos uploaded to the server?
No. All processing happens locally in your browser. Your photos never leave your device.
