iPhone Photo Filenames Changed After Upload — Here's What's Happening
You exported photos from your iPhone, uploaded them to a listing or a drive, and now the filenames look completely different. Here's why — and a fast fix.
Why iPhone Photo Filenames Change
When you share photos from the iPhone Photos app, iOS exports them with the original camera roll name — something like IMG_0047.jpg. But when those photos pass through a messaging app, AirDrop, Google Photos, iCloud Drive, or a file picker on another device, the filename can change to something generic like image001.jpg, Photo.jpg, or a long UUID string.
Uploading platforms like eBay, Etsy, or Amazon also re-assign their own internal filenames. The original sequence information — the order your phone assigned to each shot — is often lost in that process.
What This Tool Does
Img Name Fixer reads each photo's EXIF capture timestamp directly from the image file — the same timestamp your iPhone embedded when you pressed the shutter. It sorts your photos by capture time and renames them into a clean, sequential order:
Everything runs locally in your browser. Your photos are never uploaded to a server. You choose the prefix, starting number, and digit padding before downloading the renamed ZIP.
What It Does Not Do
This tool does not recover the exact filenames your iPhone originally assigned. If your phone called a photo IMG_3847.jpg, this tool will not restore that specific number. Instead, it builds a new clean sequence starting from a number you choose — which is exactly what you need for consistent upload ordering.
Step-by-Step: Rename Before You Upload
- Open Img Name Fixer on your iPhone or desktop browser.
- Tap Select Photos and pick the photos from your Camera Roll or Files app.
- Choose Capture Time sort order — this uses EXIF data to order photos by when they were taken.
- Set your prefix (e.g. IMG_) and starting number.
- Preview the renamed files in the list, then tap Download ZIP.
- Upload from the renamed ZIP instead of directly from Photos. Your filenames stay clean.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this work on iPhone directly?
Yes. Open imgnamefixer.com in Safari on your iPhone, select photos from your Camera Roll, and download the renamed ZIP to your Files app.
Will my photos be uploaded anywhere?
No. All renaming happens inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
What if a photo has no capture date?
Screenshots and images from messaging apps often lack EXIF metadata. The tool will flag them. You can switch to Manual sort to drag those photos into the position you want.
Can this recover my original IMG_#### number?
No. The original camera roll number is not stored inside the image file. This tool builds a new clean sequence starting from the number you choose.
