Rename HEIC Photos into a Clean IMG_#### Sequence
Modern iPhones shoot in HEIC format by default. Renaming a batch of .heic files into a clean, sequential order works exactly like renaming JPGs — here's how.
What Is HEIC?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones with iOS 11 and later. It produces files about half the size of a JPG at the same or better quality. HEIC files contain full EXIF metadata — including the capture timestamp, which is what Img Name Fixer uses to sort your batch.
Does Renaming HEIC Work the Same as JPG?
Yes. Img Name Fixer renames HEIC files using the same process as JPGs and PNGs — it reads the EXIF capture time, sorts the batch chronologically, and assigns new sequential names. The .heic extension is preserved automatically:
Mixed Batches: HEIC and JPG Together
If your batch contains a mix of .heic and .jpg files — which happens when you have both iPhone photos and screenshots — Img Name Fixer handles them together:
What This Tool Can and Cannot Do
✓ Can do
- • Rename HEIC files into a clean sequential sequence
- • Sort by EXIF capture time (same as JPG)
- • Handle mixed HEIC + JPG batches
- • Set custom prefix, starting number, and padding
- • Process locally — files never leave your device
✗ Cannot do
- • Convert HEIC to JPG — format is preserved as-is
- • Rename the paired MOV file for Live Photos
- • Preview HEIC thumbnails in non-Safari desktop browsers (renaming still works)
Frequently Asked Questions
Will HEIC files preview in the tool?
On iPhone Safari, HEIC files preview natively. On most desktop browsers (Chrome, Firefox), HEIC thumbnails may not display — but files are still read, sorted, and renamed correctly. The ZIP will contain properly renamed HEIC files.
Can I rename Live Photos (HEIC + MOV pairs)?
This tool renames the image component (HEIC). The associated MOV video file for Live Photos would need to be renamed separately — it won't be automatically matched.
How do I get HEIC files on my computer?
AirDrop to a Mac preserves HEIC format. Plugging your iPhone into a Mac via cable and using Image Capture also transfers HEIC files.
Does this convert HEIC to JPG?
No. Img Name Fixer only renames — it does not convert formats. The .heic extension is preserved in the output. To convert, use Preview on Mac or a dedicated converter.
Is there a file limit?
Up to 25 photos (HEIC or any format) free. Unlock unlimited export for a one-time $4.99.
