iPhone Files vs Photos: Why File Names Don't Always Stay the Same
The same photo can have different filenames depending on whether you share it from the Photos app, the Files app, or through a third-party app. Here's what's actually happening — and how to get consistent names every time.
Photos App vs Files App: What's the Difference?
Photos App (Photo Library)
The Photos app is a managed library — iOS controls the filenames. When you share from Photos, iOS exports the photo with its internal camera roll name: usually IMG_####.jpg or IMG_####.HEIC.
Files App
If you've saved a photo to Files (via "Save to Files" or AirDrop), the name it has in Files is whatever it had at the time it was saved — which might be the original camera name, a renamed version, or something a messaging app assigned.
Where Inconsistencies Come From
- AirDrop — usually preserves the original camera roll name, but the receiving device may rename it if a file with the same name already exists.
- iCloud Drive / Files sync — photos added to an iCloud Drive folder keep whatever name they had when added.
- Third-party apps — WhatsApp, Telegram, or Slack rename photos according to their own conventions before storing them.
- iCloud Shared Albums — photos downloaded from a Shared Album link often arrive with a UUID or sequential system name.
The One Thing That Survives: Capture Time
Even when filenames change, the EXIF capture timestamp usually survives — stored inside the image file itself, not in the filename. Img Name Fixer reads this timestamp and sorts your batch chronologically before renaming, regardless of what the files currently happen to be named.
Getting Consistent Filenames
- Select photos from wherever they currently live (Camera Roll, Files, Downloads).
- Img Name Fixer reads EXIF capture time and sorts your batch chronologically.
- Choose your prefix, starting number, and padding.
- Preview the sequence, then download a renamed ZIP.
All processing runs in your browser. Your photos are never uploaded to a server.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I share from Photos or Files for the most consistent names?
Sharing directly from the Photos app via AirDrop or Save to Files usually preserves the original IMG_#### name best. But for batch use, rename with Img Name Fixer after you have the files and you'll always get a consistent sequence.
What if my photos were from iCloud Shared Albums?
Save them to your Files app first, then load them into Img Name Fixer. As long as the EXIF capture time is intact (it usually is), they'll sort correctly.
Can I use this on desktop too?
Yes. Open imgnamefixer.com in any desktop browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge) and select photos from your computer. Same tool, same output.
Why does AirDrop sometimes rename my photos?
AirDrop usually preserves the original IMG_#### name, but if a file with the same name already exists at the destination, some devices auto-rename it to avoid a conflict. Img Name Fixer creates a fresh clean sequence regardless of what the current name is.
